UWABA seek advice on cycle-friendly road planning
The Dar Es Salaam Cycling Community (UWABA) aim to improve conditions for cyclists in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. They currently have the opportunity to influence the renovation of 3 roads in the city and are seeking the advice of an engineer/planner with experience of cycling issues. The type of advice they seek includes questions such as:
- Are there lanes for cyclists or lanes for cyclists and pedestrians together?
- How wide should cycle lanes be?
- Do cycle lanes pass behind bus stops to prevent cyclists running into people waiting for buses?
- How are cyclists dealt with at junctions?
- What improvements could be suggested to enhance cycle friendliness?
The three roads concerned are:
Sam Nujoma Road (already started)
Kilwa Road (about to start)
Nelson Mandela Road (still at planning stage)
the plans are available at http://photos.yahoo.com/uwabadar
UWABA would gratefully appreciate the inputs of anyone who is willing to volunteer some time (free of charge) to advise them and help them to formulate appropriate questions to take to TANROADS.
