Announcing a 3 day international rural transport workshop

The State of Rural Transport and Development: A Review of progress, challenges and lessons learnt.

 

The International Forum for Rural Transport and Development (IFRTD), the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Tanzania Forum Group (TFG) are organising a three day international workshop to review the current state of knowledge and practice on rural transport. The workshop will initiate dialogue on priority strategic issues in an attempt to consolidate the impacts of rural transport investments in developing countries. 

Convening the workshop in Tanzania is a tribute to the role the country has played in the incubation, development and dissemination of rural transport knowledge in Africa and through out the world.  The evolution of rural transport as a specific field for research and policy in developing countries can be traced to a small pilot project  in South East Tanzania, known as the Makete Integrated Rural Transport Project (MITRP).

MITRP

 

MITRP was implemented between 1985 and 1996 in Makete District, Tanzania. The project used an innovative applied research approach to develop a unified framework for understanding the wide range of constraints to access and mobility that are commonly experienced in rural areas of developing countries, and their links to poverty. 

Today MITRP can be said to have had a formative influence on transport sector policies and institutions in many countries across Sub-Saharan Africa as well as the development of Integrated Rural Access Planning (IRAP) approached that are widely applied in Asia, Africa and Latin America. 

Workshop Objectives:

1. Review the current state of rural transport knowledge and practice.

2. Identify persistent challenges in rural transport and possible solutions. 

3. Explore emerging trends and issues that have a bearing on rural transport. 

4. Facilitate dialogue that can help reposition the rural transport agenda within a rapidly changing rural, national and global development dynamic.

5. Unveil TFG's new Annual Transport Event.
