SSATP Publishes a New Knowledge Product

Appropriate use of road management systems (software, methodologies, etc...) to make informed decisions and prepare sound road maintenance programs is one of the performance indicators used to assess the efficiency of road administrations and agencies. SSATP management shares the view of member countries that these tools are inadequately, insufficiently applied and generate less than their potential impact to improve road networks.

When appraising various transport infrastructure projects ranging from rural transport infrastructure (e.g. village paths - performing mainly a social function), to national road networks (performing mainly an economic function) there is a need to use appropriate methods and approaches which are often incorporated in many available road management tools.

This road management tool guide gives an overview of 14 selected tools for road infrastructure management, and captures, in a single document, important features of these tools. By providing easy access to basic information for each of the tools, the document intends to promote their use in the SSATP member countries (and key partners groups within).

This road management tools guide is aimed at decision-makers in road administrations who may not always have the necessary technical background or time for in-depth study, but for whom a basic understanding of these tools may be desirable, if not essential. This guide is also intended as an introduction to first-time readers at the technical level. For these readers, this document provides sufficient information and the necessary context to guide them in selecting appropriate tools.
