Cuba Meeting Highlights Practical Rural Transport Initiatives

2007-03-25

The Cuba National Forum Group for Rural Transport and Development recently organised The III National Meeting of Rural Transport Service Drivers.  Taking place 02-03 February 2007 in Girón, Matanzas it brought local and national government officials together with drivers from Cuba's various districts to share knowledge and ideas for improved rural transport services.

Presentations highlighted several successful initiatives including technical and organisational solutions that have allowed service frequency and passenger numbers to increase without increasing vehicle numbers.

Many of Cuba's districts are remote and drivers play a crucial intermediary role in allowing communities to access health services. In recognition of this more than a dozen drivers have received first aid and medical training and 80% carry a service directory to help reduce the time taken to access the right service in emergencies.

Another initiative is helping people with disabilities to access bus terminals and connect to the wider rural transport network.

The IV National Meeting of Rural Transport Service Drivers will take place 04-05 February 2008.
