2007-04-27

In March 2007 IFRTD members Latin America gathered in Tarapoto, Peru to particpate in the 4th in a series of annual regional workshops to consult on Transport Sector Performance Indicators.

The workshops are organised by the Secretariat of the International Forum for Rural Transport and Development (IFRTD) on behalf of the World Bank's Transport and Social Responsibility Thematic Group . They form part of the Bank's ongoing initiave to work with partners and stakeholders to review the measures and indicators that are used in the transport sector. Their aim is to develop a comprehensive draft set of Transport Performance and Impact Indicators which will:

- Facilitate the management of various sub sectors to enable them to deliver transport services cost effectively and appropriately.

- Help in the monitoring of the sector's performance with respect to its contribution to the implementation of agreed national policies.

- Provide better insights into regional and global perspectives of transport activity and trends.

The Latin American Workshop followed in the footsteps of workshops in Kenya (2004), Sri Lanka (2005) and South Africa (2006) and was hosted by the Peruvian National Forum on Rural Transport and Development with support from Provías Descentralizado.
